The Institute's Quarterly Journal containing articles and features, Institute information, a forum for members to express their opinions, views, put forward ideas and advertise their services.
Code of Practice for the Ultrasonic Thickness Measurements of Iron and Steel Small Craft Structures Code of Practice for the Ultrasonic Thickness Measurements of Iron and Steel Small Craft Structures
The purpose of this Code of Practice is to give the Marine Surveyor some of the technical background for the deterioration for ferrous metal structures in the marine environment and to suggest guidelines for the survey and the measurement of the remaining thickness of metal of such hulls.  The suggestions of the Code may need modification in any given set of circumstances.  This particular Code of Practice is also strictly applicable only to un-classed vessels.  Where vessels are classed then the Surveyor must work within the rules and regulations of the appropriate Classification Society
Code of Practice for Draught Surveys  Code of Practice for Draught Surveys
The purpose of a draught survey is to determine the amount of cargo loaded or discharged for the benefit of all the interested parties.  A well-conducted draught survey of a large vessel should achieve an accuracy to within 0.5% .  The survey must be conducted meticulously, taking into account all the prevailing circumstances.  The final report should incorporate every aspect and difficulty which has been encountered in order to convey all aspects of the survey.  This book tells you how to carry out a survey.
Code of Practice for the Measurement & Analysis of the Wetness of FRP Hulls Code of Practice for the Measurement & Analysis of the Wetness of FRP Hulls
This Code of Practice is recommended to be followed by all Surveyors in order to ensure that all vessels constructed of fibre reinforced plastic are measured for hull water impregnation in an identical manner and to a definite standard so that the results may be accurately and scientifically compared.
Guidelines for Surveyors Conducting Pre-Shipment Inspections of Steel Cargoes Guidelines for Surveyors Conducting Pre-Shipment Inspections of Steel Cargoes
Loss prevention should always be perceived as being more beneficial than claims handling and it is in the category of loss prevention that the steel pre-shipment inspection fails.  A leading P&I Club recently reported
that claims on steel cargoes still amounted to 11% of total claims on dry cargoes and was, therefore, regarded as continuing to be a problem area.  The need for accurate clausing of Mate's receipts/bills of lading is, therefore, apparent and the best possible way to achieve this is by means of an accurate pre-shipment inspection of the cargo.
Guidelines for Surveyors Conducting Pre-Purchase Vessel Condition Surveys  Guidelines for Surveyors Conducting Pre-Purchase Vessel Condition Surveys
Condition Surveys of vessels are required for a number of reasons - these may be to establish the condition of a vessel for Hull and Machinery Underwriters, for Protection and Indemnity Associations, for Classification Societies, for Mortgage Banks/Financial Institutions and for the 'SALE AND PURCHASE' Industry.  The type of Condition Survey to be carried out will depend on the end requirement and the Client's specification.  The Superficial Condition Survey carried out for the Sale and Purchase Industry is generally known as a PRE-PURCHASE SURVEY and the appointment for this type survey is normally via a Ship Broker or a prospective buyer.
Code of Practice for the Carrying out of Inclining Experiments on Floating Vessels.  Code of Practice for the Carrying out of Inclining Experiments on Floating Vessels.
It is an International Statutory Requirement that all commercial vessels - with certain very minor exceptions such as wooden vessels of primitive build - be subjected to an Inclining Experiment.  This Code of Practice is intended to provide simple practical guidance for the carrying out of such inclining experiments with the purpose of minimising inaccuracies and ensuring that the information derived form the experiment gives a satisfactory basis, acceptable to the Flag State Authorities, for the determination of the vessel's transverse and longitudinal stability
Guidelines for Surveyors Conducting On-Hire Vessel Surveys (Dry Cargo) Guidelines for Surveyors Conducting On-Hire Vessel Surveys (Dry Cargo)
The purpose of an On-Hire Survey is to record the physical condition of the vessel at the time of it being delivered into a Charter.   Instructions are normally received from the vessel's agent, who may be either representing the owners and/or the charterers.  In the majority of cases, the charterers will nominate a survey company and then negotiate with the owners as to whether that survey company is acceptable to them.  In the case of a Joint Survey, the surveyor be attending jointly and representing both the owners and the charterers.  In some instances, the Charterers will appoint a surveyor and the owners will rely on the vessel's Master as their representative.  This book contains details of Condition Surveys, Bunker Surveys, Delivery Certificate, Description of Vessel, Certification, Photograph, Report, Watertight Integrity, Off-Hire/Re-Delivery Surveys.
