As a result of this programme a number of new tonnage measurers/ surveyors have qualified and are now recognised.\n\nThe Part I theory trai ning is available to IIMS members and non-members too and provides an esse ntial knowledge base into tonnage measurement. But to become formally auth orised to process tonnages through IIMS where the Institute has registry a greements in place – see list below – both Part I and Part II must be completed and you need to be a member of the Institute. Those who wish to study Part I only\, UK tonnage measurement theory\, may do so to extend th eir surveying knowledge.\n\nIIMS makes good use of technology to deliver i ts tried and tested methodology of authorising tonnage surveyors. The tonn age theory training Part I will be presented online by Fraser Noble\, Chai r of the IIMS Certifying Authority\, on 23 September 2025 remotely to surv eyors who are involved with vessels up to 24 metres via the Zoom platform. \n\nPart I – Tonnage measurement theory seminar\nIIMS will deliver the n ext live tonnage measurement theory seminar on 23 September 2025 from 15.0 0 to 18.00 (UK time). The training provides a thorough explanation of UK t onnage measurement theory\, including the background to tonnage and detail ing the specific requirements and measurements\, plus associated documenta tion necessary to successfully complete a tonnage measurement/survey.\n\nP rior to the seminar\, registered delegates will be sent the comprehensive IIMS Tonnage Training Manual in pdf format. The seminar itself will be rec orded. Following the presentation\, all delegates will be sent the PowerPo int slides and a copy of the video as a reference. A certificate of attend ance will be issued.\n\nThe cost for Part I only remotely is £160 (no VAT ).\n\nPart II – The practical self-produced video evidence (or\, on this occasion\, you may join the face-to-face training at Itchenor\, UK\, on 2 4 September 2025).\n\nFor those who wish to become an IIMS approved tonnag e surveyor and thus be able to process tonnages through the Institute\, it is necessary to complete Part II\, the practical evidence-based assessmen t leading to formal authorisation.\n\nThe day after the theory training on 24 September\, IIMS is running a practical face-to-face tonnage training session to be held at Itchenor Sailing Club\, UK\, from 09.00 to 14.00 (a working lunch is provided). You will measure and calculate tonnage on thre e vessels under the guidance of experienced surveyors. Your paperwork will be scrutinized and approval granted on successful completion.\n\nIf you c an't make it in person\, Part II can be undertaken remotely\, and can be d one at the surveyor’s convenience once Part I has been undertaken. Surve yors will be required to record short video clips (filmed by their own han d or by an attending associate) to demonstrate an understanding of the req uirements and principles of conducting a tonnage measurement as taught by the theory training in Part I. IIMS will want to see video evidence of mea surements being taken on a vessel in water\, out of water and one with a s tep-deck for scrutineering before approval is granted. IIMS had made some sample videos to give an idea of what is expected which can be viewed on a YouTube playlist as guidance. Video evidence\, along with a completed ele ctronic tonnage form\, needs to be submitted for scrutineering before auth orisation is granted.\n\nThose who become formally authorised as an IIMS M CA approved tonnage surveyor on completion of Part I and Part II will rece ive a formal certificate of achievement.\n\nThe cost for Part I and Part I I is £325 (no VAT).\n\nImportant note.\n\nThe MCA Tonnage Authority agree ment authorises IIMS to certificate United Kingdom ships in accordance wit h certain applicable requirements of the legislation. Part III of the 1997 Regulations regulates the tonnage and certification of under 24 metre ves sels by way of a simplified tonnage measurement system.\n\nIIMS is current ly able to process tonnage surveys on behalf of surveyors through the foll owing registries:\nBritish Virgin Islands\nCayman Islands\nGibraltar\nGuer nsey\nIsle of Man\nJersey\nUnited Kingdom\n\nIf you become authorised thro ugh IIMS training and wish to carry out tonnage surveys through registries other than those named above\, please note that the Institute does not ha ve formal agreements in place at this time. Other registries may have simi lar but different tonnage requirements and you should satisfy yourself bef ore becoming formally IIMS authorized.
