SUMMARY:Intensive 7 day practical IIMS boatbuilding course - Second edition
DESCRIPTION:At the end of last year\, despite Covid\, IIMS managed to run i
 ts first in-person 7 day practical residential course for those studying f
 or the Institute's Yacht &amp\; Small Craft professional qualification\, a
 lthough the course is open to anyone wanting to get practical boatbuilding
  experience. Six students participated and all successfully passed the mod
 ule.\n\nWorking in conjunction with the Lyme Regis Boat Building Academy\,
  based on the UK south coast\, we have put together an intensive 7-day pro
 gramme to be held at their facilities using their expert tutors and purpos
 e-built facilities.\n\nThis practical module runs just once a year and spa
 ces are strictly limited. Only up to 12 students can be accommodated annua
 lly on each course.\n\nThe residential course is scheduled to take place f
 rom Sunday 12 December at 12.00 noon until 16.30 until Saturday 18 Decembe
 r 2021. Quality self-catering accommodation will be booked locally in the 
 town by IIMS and is included in the cost.\n\nThe cost for the 7 day progra
 mme to include accommodation is £1\,300 (no VAT). Your food and travel ar
 e at your own expense. Payment terms are 50% on confirming your reservatio
 n with the balance due 30 days before the programme start date. We underst
 and that Covid could impact on travel from overseas nearer the time\, so w
 ith this in mind if you book a place and subsequently cannot travel due to
  Covid\, your deposit or payment in full will be refunded to you.\n\nThis

 Day 1 &amp\; 2 Introduction\, wooden hulls and adhesives\n 	Day 3 Practica
 l boat survey tips on boats in the harbour\, NDT demonstration and report 
 writing lecture\n 	Day 4 FRP workshop\n 	Days 5 &amp\; 6 FRP workshop\n 	D
 ay 7 Recap\, multiple-choice questions and close\n\nAn extract of the prac
 tical elements and what you will learn are:\n\nWooden boatbuilding methods
  – traditional and modern\n· Clinker and carvel\n· Glued clinker/clink
 er ply\, glued carvel\, cold moulding\, strip-planking/sheathing\, strip-p
 lanking/moulding and stitch and tape\n· Approaches to set-up and building
 \nStandards in construction (Lloyds and Seafish)\nTerminology\, specific t
 erms particular to wooden boats\n\nPractical activities in the FRP worksho
 p\n· Demonstration by instructor\n· Application of gelcoats\n· Wet hand
  layup\, resin and reinforcement\n· Applying gelcoat to tiles as per inst
 ructor demonstration\n\nFaults in FRP\n· Faults that occur during layup (
 thin gel\, under cure\, exotherm\, dry spots and voids etc.)\n· Faults fr
 om handling (gel coat cracks and star crazing\, gel scratches)\n· Damage 
 that occurs during use (impact damage\, crush\, penetration\, delamination
  of structural elements\, stress cracks\, compression around fittings etc.
