As a result of this programme a number of new tonnage measurers/ surveyors have qualified and are now recognised.\n\nThe Part I theory trai ning is available to IIMS members and non-members too. But to become forma lly authorised to process tonnages through IIMS where the Institute has re gistry agreements in place - see list below - both Part I and Part II must be completed and you need to be a member of the Institute. Those who wish to study Part I only\, UK tonnage measurement theory\, may do so to exten d their surveying knowledge.\n\nIIMS continues to make good use of technol ogy to deliver its tried and tested methodology of authorising tonnage sur veyors. The tonnage theory training Part I will be offered on 21 November 2024 remotely to surveyors who are involved with vessels up to 24 metres v ia the Zoom platform.\nPart I – Tonnage measurement theory seminar\nIIMS will deliver the next live tonnage measurement theory seminar on 21 Novem ber 2024 from 09.15 to 12.15 (UK time). The training provides a thorough e xplanation of UK tonnage measurement theory\, including the background to tonnage and detailing the specific requirements and measurements\, plus as sociated documentation necessary to successfully complete a tonnage measur ement/survey.\n\nPrior to the seminar\, registered delegates will be sent the comprehensive IIMS Tonnage Training Manual in pdf format. The seminar itself will be recorded. Following the presentation\, all delegates will b e sent the PowerPoint slides and a copy of the video as a reference. A cer tificate of attendance will be issued.\n\nThe cost for Part I only remotel y is £150 (no VAT).\nPart II – The practical self-produced video eviden ce\nFor those who wish to become an IIMS approved tonnage surveyor and thu s able to process tonnages through the Institute\, it is necessary to comp lete Part II\, the practical evidence-based assessment leading to formal a uthorisation.\n\nYou may take as long as they wish to complete Part II and it can be done at the surveyor’s convenience once Part I has been under taken. Surveyors will be required to record short video clips (filmed by t heir own hand or by an attending associate) to demonstrate an understandin g of the requirements and principles of conducting a tonnage measurement a s taught by the theory training in Part I. IIMS will want to see video evi dence of measurements being taken on a vessel in water\, out of water and one with a step-deck for scrutineering before approval is granted. IIMS ha d made some sample videos to give an idea of what is expected which can be viewed on a YouTube playlist as guidance. Video evidence along with a com pleted electronic tonnage form needs to be submitted for scrutineering bef ore authorisation is granted.\n\nThose who become formally authorised as a n IIMS MCA approved tonnage surveyor on completion of Part I and Part II w ill receive a formal certificate of achievement.\n\nThe cost for Part I an d Part II is £295 (no VAT).\n\nImportant note.\n\nThe MCA Tonnage Authori ty agreement authorises IIMS to certificate United Kingdom ships in accord ance with certain applicable requirements of the legislation. Part III of the 1997 Regulations regulates the tonnage and certification of under 24 m etre vessels by way of a simplified tonnage measurement system.\n\nIIMS is currently able to process tonnage surveys on behalf of surveyors through the following registries:\nBritish Virgin Islands\nCayman Islands\nGibralt ar\nGuernsey\nIsle of Man\nJersey\nUnited Kingdom\n\nIf you become authori sed through IIMS training and wish to carry out tonnage surveys through re gistries other than those named above\, please note that the Institute doe s not have formal agreements in place at this time. Other registries may h ave similar but different tonnage requirements and you should satisfy your self before becoming formally IIMS authorized.
