SUMMARY:Remote Tonnage Training
DESCRIPTION:IIMS is authorised and approved by the Maritime &amp\; Coastgua
rd Agency (MCA) to conduct the training and subsequent approval of tonnage
surveyors through online theory training (Part I) and remote practical vi
deo demonstration (Part II). This is an additional service to its existing
face-to-face UK tonnage training\, which has been authorised by the MCA f
or some years. As a result of this training programme a number of new tonn
age measurement surveyors have qualified and are now recognised.\n\nThe Pa
rt I theory training is available to IIMS members and non-members too. But
to become formally authorised to process tonnages through IIMS where the
Institute has registry agreements in place - see list below - both Part I
and Part II must be completed and you need to be a member. Those who wish
to study Part I only\, UK tonnage measurement theory\, may do so to extend
their surveying knowledge.\n\nIIMS is building on its use of technology t
o deliver its tried and tested methodology of authorising tonnage surveyor
 s. Therefore\, tonnage theory training Part I will be offered on 29 June 2
023 remotely to surveyors who are involved with vessels up to 24 metres.\n
\nPart I – Tonnage measurement theory seminar\n\nUsing the Zoom platform
for online delegates\, IIMS will deliver the next live tonnage measuremen
t theory seminar on 29 June 2023 from 09.30 to 12.30 (UK time). The traini
ng provides a thorough explanation of UK tonnage measurement theory\, incl
uding the background to tonnage and detailing the specific requirements an
d measurements necessary to successfully complete a tonnage measurement.\n
\nPrior to the seminar\, delegates will be sent the comprehensive IIMS Ton
nage Training Manual in pdf format. The seminar itself will be recorded. F
ollowing the presentation\, all delegates will be sent the PowerPoint slid
es and a copy of the video as a reference. A certificate of attendance wil
l be issued.\n\nThe cost for Part I only remotely is £130.\n\nPart II –
The practical video evidence\n\nFor those who wish to become an IIMS appr
oved tonnage surveyor and thus able to process tonnages through the Instit
ute\, it is necessary to complete Part II\, the practical evidence-based a
ssessment leading to formal authorisation.\n\nThose who attend in person w
ill be able to measure boats at the venue\, record the data and hand their
forms directly to the tutor for assessment prior to approval being grante
d.\n\nThose who are not present in person may take as long as they wish to
complete Part II and it can be done at the surveyor’s convenience once
Part I has been undertaken. Surveyors will be required to record short vid
eo clips (filmed by their own hand or by an attending associate) to demons
trate an understanding of the requirements and principles of conducting a
tonnage measurement as taught by the theory training in Part I. IIMS will
want to see video evidence of measurements being taken on a vessel in wate
r\, out of water and one with a step-deck for scrutineering. IIMS had made
some sample videos to give an idea of what is expected which can be viewe
d on a YouTube playlist. Video evidence along with a completed electronic
tonnage form needs to be submitted for scrutineering before authorisation
is granted.\n\nThose who become formally authorised as an IIMS MCA approve
d tonnage surveyor on completion of Part I and Part II will receive a form
al certificate of achievement.\n\nThe cost for Part I and Part II using th
e remote method is £275.\n\nImportant note.\n\nThe MCA Tonnage Authority
agreement authorises IIMS to certificate United Kingdom ships in accordanc
e with certain applicable requirements of the legislation. Part III of the
1997 Regulations regulates the tonnage and certification of under 24 metr
e vessels by way of a simplified tonnage measurement system.\n\nIIMS is cu
rrently able to process tonnage surveys on behalf of surveyors through the
  following registries:\nBritish Virgin Islands\nCayman Islands\nGibraltar\
 nGuernsey\nIsle of Man\nJersey\nUnited Kingdom\n\nIf you become authorised
through IIMS training and wish to carry out tonnage surveys through regis
tries other than those named above\, please note that the Institute does n
ot have formal agreements in place at this time. Other registries may have
similar but different tonnage requirements and you should satisfy yoursel
f before becoming formally IIMS authorized. IIMS will provide confirmation
of your certification to other registries on request to help you to gain
their acceptance of your capabilities as a tonnage surveyor\, but IIMS can
not give a guarantee of their acceptance.\n\nRegister your place below. Or
if you prefer not to book online\, please email Vicki Loizides or call he
 r on +44 23 9238 5223 and we will invoice you.
