Submarine & Liveaborad vessel |
Yellow sub Subcat Catalonia collided with a liveaboard vessel and had its communications cable cut by a dive in two separate incidents. The sub, operated by Down Under Submarines, had five passengers on board when it made an uncontrolled ascent beneath a 34 m dive liveaboard soon after starting its dive. The liveaboard vessel was tied to a mooring buoy at the Doc Poulson artificial-reef site in Grand Cayman’s West Bay when it was hit by the sub from below. No one was hurt in the incident. The sub’s main cabin was unaffected and only had superficial scratches to its glass-fibre exterior. The liveaboard had no visible signs of damage to its rudder, propellor or hull and appeared to continue as usual. The sub’s operations manager said the collision was a result of miscommunication from their surface support vessel, which should have let them know of the liveaboard’s position to them well before the sub’s ascent over a coral ridge. They added the sub normally needed to carry at least 12 for stability and had used sandbags to add weight.
In a second incident, both of which were reported by the Cayman Compass, the sub was diving near the Doc Poulson wreck when it had its VHF communications cable was cut by another company’s owner. The linked to a float trailing the sub allowed the sub to communicate with its surface support vessel. The sub had to abort its dive and the operations manager claimed it cost him $3,000 to repair the cable. The owner of the dive boat told the Cayman Compass they cut the cable as they were concerned for the safety its dive boat and customers and said the cable was getting entangled in its engine. A criminal complaint had been filed against the owner of the dive boat as a result of the incident.
