The biggest news this month I have to impart is that Vicky Lawrence has resigned her position as Financial Controller with IIMS. She formally left the organisation on 31st August. Over more than a decade, Vicky, who is well known to many members, has been at the heart of the Institute and has seen it develop from a cottage industry to what it has become today over that time. On behalf of the members, management board and myself, we thank Vicky for what she has done and wish her well for the future. Also it is sad to have to report the departure of Elle Hardham. Elle has run the Professional Qualifications distance learning programme for the past couple of years. We wish Elle good luck.

At the time of writing this column, I am preparing to head to Singapore to host the IIMS and eCMID seminars and as you are reading this News Bulletin, it is possible we will be half way through proceedings. The number of people who plan to turn out across the three days of activities is encouraging – and even more encouraging for me is that only 30% are IIMS members. So I am looking forward to spreading the word about IIMS membership to a Far East audience, many of whom will be unfamiliar with IIMS. It is planned to record some of the Singapore presentations and to release them through the IIMS YouTube channel – more on that soon.

I have decided to use some of the IIMS News Bulletin space to write a brief article each month by way of an introduction and update; so this is my first CEO Chat column. Life at IIMS is always challenging. Trying to keep nearly 1,000 members, who work in every conceivable area of marine surveying in its broadest sense content, is never a simple task! So I have been particularly pleased to have heard from a large number of members on three
counts in the past month. Firstly, I am grateful to those members who took the opportunity to write and tell me what a great edition number 80 of The Report magazine was. The IIMS London Conference 2017 will take place on Monday 11 and Tuesday 12 September 2017 at Regent’s University in central London at the start of the important London Shipping Week. The Conference dinner is confirmed for the evening of 11 September and will be held at an iconic and inspiring venue – the Churchill Cabinet War Rooms, Winston Churchill’s secret World War II underground bunker and command centre. The Annual General Meeting will be held at Regent’s University on 12 September at 14.00.

IIMS subsidiary, Marine Surveying Academy, which manages the eCMID programme for IMCA, accredited by the Institute, is pleased to announce its first Conference. The special one day Conference will take place on Tuesday 25th April 2017 in Amsterdam by Schiphol Airport from: 09.00 hrs to 16.30 hrs.

The date for the IIMS 2017 London Conference has been set. It will take place at Regent’s University on 11 and 12 September to coincide with the start of the important London Shipping Week, which is expected to draw representatives from the maritime industry to the UK from all over the world. The IIMS 2017 Annual General Meeting will take place on 12 September in the afternoon. The Conference dinner is planned for the evening of Monday 11 September at a venue to be announced. The IIMS is now calling for papers for Conference and invites proposals from IIMS members and others in the maritime business who wish to address a group of prominent, international marine surveyors.

After a period of review, the IIMS CPD (Continuing Professional Development) scheme is set for a major overhaul in 2017. CPD is required for all members and the IIMS Management Board agreed the roll out of the new programme at their meeting in December. Full details of how to get involved with the new scheme will be announced in the coming weeks, both by email and in writing directly to you.

SCWG to be renamed and rebranded as LYSCWG. With effect from 1 January 2017, the IIMS SCWG (Small Craft Working Group) will become known as the LYSCWG (Large Yacht & Small Craft Working Group). IIMS Chairman of Yacht & Small Craft, John Excell, who was behind the decision to rebrand, explained, “There has been a significant shift in the market place with the continuing and exciting developments in the superyacht industry. A number of IIMS members who worked in the sub 24 metre vessels sector have progressed into the area of superyacht surveying, or are interested to do so.
