This essential online presentation is being given by Dr Mike Lewus. He is someone well known to IIMS and has authored and delivers the Professional Qualification in Marine Corrosion.
In this short two hour presentation, entitled Understanding Microbial Induced Corrosion (MIC), Mike will cover the fundamentals of corrosion in the marine environment and examine how microorganisms can influence and accelerate corrosion processes.
Drawing on research project work and real-world case studies, it explains why corrosion can be particularly aggressive in seawater and how biofilms and microbial activity contribute to characteristic damage patterns observed on vessels and marine structures.
The case studies highlight where microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) is genuinely likely, where it is commonly misidentified, and why careful interpretation is essential. The session concludes with a practical overview of detection, diagnosis, and prevention, including a clear, step-by-step approach that surveyors and marine professionals can apply in the field.
The event is being presented by Zoom and joining room details will be provided in good time before the event.
