09.15 Registration
09.30 An introduction to laser shearography. Session to be led by Professor John Tyrer, Managing Director of Laser Optical Engineering Ltd. John has 40 years of experience in industry and academia. The Defect Dtect system developed in John’s R&D facility is a small, modular, and versatile lase shearography unit providing whole field, non-contact, non-destructve testing for the inspection of composites, bonded structures, and other advanced materials.
During the morning session, which is being held in John’s workshops, a number of practical demonstrations will be undertaken and explained to showcase the technology. The practical is mixed with the theory as to what laser shearography technology is and what it can do.
10.45 Tea & Coffee
11.00 Continuation of introduction to laser shearography. During these first two morning sessions, the following topics will be covered:
– Strain analysis of composite structures. To assist in the design of optimal composites.
– Manufacturing faults identification. To improve the design and build quality of composites.
– In life/refit and damage identification of composites. To identify various types of composite damage and assess their effect on the structures.
– Traffic light system of red amber and green, covering delamination, disbonds, core materials, osmosis blisters etc.
– Laser shearography of carbon rigging and composite masts.
12.45 Lunch
13.30 Professor Bob Cripps, former Engineering Manager at the RNLI. Bob plans to share his extensive knowledge and experience with the group gained from many years as technical lead at RNLI.
Bob is well known for his work in the design and development of small craft and the use of composite materials in marine applications. This was recognised with the award of an Honorary Doctor of Engineering from Bournemouth University in 2005. His particular areas of interest and expertise are the development and integration of methods and processes to enable naval architects and designers to utilise the latest technical developments simply at an early stage of the design process. He was Engineering Manager at RNLI for 18 years responsible for the design and development of all the classes of lifeboats (offshore and inshore), launching equipment and moorings.
15.15 Tea & Coffee
15.30 John Tyrer wraps up and concludes the day.
16.00 Close and depart.
Important notice: Due to limited space in the workshops, a maximum of 15 in-person delegate places are available. However, others from further afield are invited to join as an online delegate. A video will be made of the day’s proceedings for sharing with all delegates after the event.
