Having rested this programme for a couple of years, IIMS is bringing its practical boat-building course back by popular demand later in 2026. The Boat Building Academy is a recognised centre of learning excellence.
Numbers for this exceptional learning opportunity are strictly limited to just 8 students, so please act promptly to reserve your place.
Who should attend?
– Students who are studying to be a marine surveyor
– Marine surveyors who are new to the profession
This 5-day course is being held at the Boat Building Academy facility in Lyme Regis, Dorset, UK, from 7-11 December 2026.
Students who are enrolled in the IIMS Yacht & Small Craft Professional Qualification may claim attendance at the course as one module.
The Boat Building Academy tutors are highly experienced and will host the event on behalf of IIMS. The content is based on two days of wooden boat theory, to include discussions on faults in wooden boats and typical issues, followed by three days of FRP/GRP with some practical work, including hand lay-ups and repairs, and will cover faults in FRP/GRP, including osmosis. Faults in wooden boats and osmosis were both mentioned after the last course in 2022 as areas where the students would like more information, so the Boat Building Academy will focus time on these subjects.
In brief, here’s what we have on each day:
Day 1 – Monday 7 December 2026 – Introductions and wooden hulls
Day 2 – Tuesday 8 December 2026 – Wooden hulls, faults and issues
Day 3 – Wednesday 9 December 2026 – Fibre reinforced plastics
Day 4 – Thursday 10 December 2026 – Fibre reinforced plastics and practical activities
Day 5 – Friday 11 December 2026 – Fibre reinforced plastics practical
