Join IIMS at Shannon Harbour in Co Offaly for two days of exceptional and essential training. The first day is highly practical-based, and there’s a chance to get your hands dirty under the tutelage of Damian Buckley, who will lead the proceedings. The second day is classroom-based in the nearby Community Hall with Karen Brain and Dr Mike Lewus flying over in person to lead the morning session.

Day 1
09.30 – 10.30 Workshop on how a docking plan should be created and what to look for.
10.30 – 11.30 Docking the boat and emptying the dock.
11.30 – 12.30 Conducting thickness testing on the hull and checking out the anodes.
Lunch – 6 minute drive to a nearby pub at own cost.
14.15 – 15.15 Assessing examples of how plating is applied and what to look for, plus a rudder modification with some welding that should be looked for.
15.15 – 16.15 How to check the bearing and shaft, plus any questions, and a tour of our other barge floating.
Also, we will look at welding processes in the late afternoon, common weld defects, and what’s acceptable as an overplate on a boat. A couple of welding units will be available, so anyone who wants can have a go at welding, just so they understand how difficult it is, and again what to look for.
Day 2
09.30 – 11.00 The different types of corrosion, their causes and effects presented by Dr Mike Lewus.
11.00 – 12.30 Karen Brain talks about the compilation of reports and surveyor ethics.
Lunch – 6 minute drive to a nearby pub at own cost.
14.15 – 14.45 IIMS activities and the state of the Institute by Mike Schwarz.
14.45 – 15.45 Electrical surveying – what surveyors need to be aware of by Paul Madeley (pre-recorded video).
15.45 – 16.45 Lithium-ion battery fires – a non-technical presentation by Mike Schwarz.
