News has reached the IIMS head office about a prestigious Royal award that has recently been given to the Institute’s oldest member. Ian Nicolson is still surveying, winning races and writing books at the grand old age of 97.
Ian, who lives in Cove, Scotland, will receive an MBE after being included in the King’s Birthday Honours List last month.
And, just last month, he won the CYCA two-handed class at the Scottish Series on Loch Fyne and has since competed again in the Round Bute Race, partnered by a relative youngster aged just 80. An expert in surveying, yacht design and restoration, he has published 27 books (including several handy guides through IIMS) and is still writing.
A citation from the Cabinet Office said, “Ian has dedicated nearly eight decades as a sailing enthusiast, volunteer instructor, and role model, profoundly shaping the lives of countless individuals.
“He is a widely regarded subject matter expert in yacht design, maintenance, and restoration, having authored over 27 books, including the “bible of boat data,” and continuing to contribute as a prolific writer and illustrator for yachting publications.
“His unparalleled technical knowledge, particularly of older vessels, and his passion for sharing this expertise have ensured that vital seafaring knowledge is preserved and passed on.
“As a founding member and long-serving port officer of the Ocean Cruising Club, he provided guidance and hospitality to visiting sailors for over 70 years.
“He remains an active sailor, yacht racer, surveyor, designer, and advisor, serving as an inspiration through his enduring enthusiasm, humility and commitment to community engagement.”
