The new maritime transport review 2023 has been published

In a world rife with cascading crises – geoeconomic fragmentation, retreating development, and climate change – maritime trade serves as a stabilizing anchor, holding fast against the turbulent currents of disruption which are reflected in the maritime transport review 2023.

Over four fifths of all trade in the world flows through the high seas. This includes the crucial trade of food, energy, and other essential goods. As recent trade disruptions, and most notably that of Black Sea food exports due to the war in Ukraine have shown, in our interconnected world, billions of people need open ports and steady ships to eat, keep their lights on, and have their hospitals well-stocked. Coronial Findings into Boating Incident

BoatThe Boating Industry Association Ltd has released a statement regarding the boating incident off the New South Wales, Australia mid north coast on 26 January 2020.

Here is their statement:

The Boating Industry Association acknowledges the Deputy State Coroner in NSW Magistrate Kennedy’s efforts to investigate matters surrounding a tragic boating incident off the NSW mid north coast on 26 January 2020.

The Coroner found Alan Bruce Beeby died as ‘a result of an inherent defect in the vessel Eliza 1 causing it to capsize resulting in drowning’ whilst 16 nautical miles offshore and about 15 nautical miles north of Seal Rocks. Continue reading “Coronial Findings into Boating Incident”

The Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) examines and investigates all types of marine accidents to or on-board UK flagged vessels worldwide, and other vessels in UK territorial waters. This Safety Digest, the second edition of 2023, is a compendium of anonymous articles involving vessels from the merchant, fishing and small craft sector which draws the attention of the marine community to some of the lessons arising from investigations into recent accidents and incidents.

The Inland Waterways Association (IWA) has published An Introduction to Electric Drive Narrowboats guide.

IWA believes that it is vital for members of the inland waterways community to make their contribution to a more sustainable environment. IWA’s Sustainable Boating Group has been looking at how inland waterways leisure boating can become more sustainable since 2019 and published its Vision Paper in 2020, covering propulsion, the existing fleet and domestic energy on boats. A court in Hungary has sentenced a Viking cruise ship captain to five and a half years in prison for his role in a collision with a tour boat that left 27 people dead in the Danube River in Budapest.

On Tuesday 26 September, 68-year-old Ukrainian national Yuri Chaplinsky, captain of the Viking Cruises river cruise ship Viking Sigyn, was found guilty of negligence leading to mass casualties after his vessel struck and severely damaged the tour boat Hableány on the night of 29 May 2019. New from ICOMIA – the Paint Colour Guide: Yacht Coating Technical Guidelines

The International Council of Marine Industry Associations (ICOMIA) has produced a Paint Colour Guide: Yacht Coating Technical Guidelines as a result of their work with leading yacht coating manufacturers including Akzo Nobel, Hempel, Boero, CMP Chugoku and specialist coating consultants the Safinah Group.

The guide has been produced by ICOMIA members, for their members and the wider marine sector, in conjunction with industry technical experts including yacht paint surveyors, inspectors, chemists and formulators. It aims to provide clear, objective industry guidance on the use of paint colours and yacht coatings.

What caught my eye: September 2023

Well here’s what would seem to be a highly unusual incident that greeted the good folk of Scorby Sands off the coast of Norfolk , UK one morning recently. The photograph was captured by a local resident. The accompanying video was graphic as the fire burned out of control.

The turbine fire in the nearshore wind farm at Scorby Sands spread smoke along the English coastline. The operator of the wind farm, Germany’s RWE, reported no one was injured, but operations were suspended for a period. The Coast Guard said there was an evacuation of personnel in the wind farm as a precaution but that no one was working on the particular tower when the fire began. With growing container ship capacity and threat of cargo losses at sea coinciding, ClassNK has recently published two sets of guidelines to help improve cargo safety at sea.

The recent increase in container ship capacity – a response to the growing demand for freight container transport – has coincided with a sharp increase in the number of containers lost overboard, including some notable examples of stack collapse. While rising stack heights have surely contributed to this trend, other influential factors include wave height and size, the ship’s vertical centre of gravity (CoG), the CoG of the container stack and variability in stowage, and cargo securing equipment. ABS publishes the January 2024 Edition of Guide for Performance Standards for Corrosion Protection

The American Bureau of Shipping has published the January 2024 Edition of Guide for Performance Standards for Corrosion Protection.

Corrosion protection requirements are specified in SOLAS Chapter II-1/3-2 for protective coatings of dedicated seawater ballast tanks in all types of ships and protective coatings of double-side skin spaces of bulk carriers, and in SOLAS Chapter II-1/3-11 for protective coatings or corrosion resistance materials of cargo oil tanks of crude oil tankers.
