Annual Report

The U.S. Coast Guard has published its 2024 Recreational Boating Statistics Report. The report records the fewest boating fatalities since the Service began collecting statistics more than 50 years ago.

Fatalities fell 1.4% to 556 from 564 in 2023, while overall incidents increased by 1.1% from 3,844 to 3,887. Nonfatal injuries increased 2.1% from 2,126 to 2,170. Alcohol continued to be the leading known contributing factor in fatal boating accidents in 2024, accounting for 92 deaths, or 20% of total fatalities. CHIRP Maritime has released its 2024 Annual Digest containing all the reports which were published last year and other items of interest.

The Oil Companies International Marine Forum (OCIMF) has published its annual report for 2025, highlighting the launch of SIRE 2.0, which marked a significant step-change in how tanker inspections are conducted and reported.

The Paris MoU has published its 2024 Annual Report.

The detention rate for 2024 has seen an increase, reaching 4.03% compared to 3.81% in 2023. This rise marks a continuation of a consistently high detention percentage observed over several years, including 4.25% in 2022. TSB Canada releases Annual Report 2024-25, marking 35 years of advancing transportation safety. 

Since its inception in 1990, the TSB has completed more than 2000 investigations, made more than 630 recommendations, and issued hundreds of safety communications. Germany’s Federal Bureau for Maritime Casualty Investigation has published its BSU Annual Report for 2024, providing insights on marine casualties. The total number of notifications has dropped year-on-year: 625 in 2024 compared to 698 in 2023. This equals a reduction of about 10%. Unfortunately, this is not yet cause for celebration, as the number of marine casualties according to the IMO Code, i.e. accidents that had serious consequences, has remained stable at a high level (131 compared to 134). The International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA) has published its annual Safety Statistics Report, showing that ‘line of fire’ incidents remained the leading cause of lost time injuries (LTIs) among IMCA marine contractor Members in 2024, accounting for more than half (52%) of such injuries. The research, which IMCA has published each year since 1996, found that the total lost-time injury rate (LTIR) across its contributing Members’ onshore and offshore operations remained unchanged at 0.3 incidents per million hours worked. The Black Sea MoU has published its Annual Report for 2024, detailing its actions and presenting key Port State Control (PSC) data. The 2024 reporting period was significantly impacted by the ongoing armed conflict between the Russian Federation and Ukraine, which continued to pose serious risks to the safety and security of crews and vessels operating in the region, conflicting with the BS MoU’s objectives.
