TSB Canada releases Annual Report 2024-25, marking 35 years of advancing transportation safety.
Since its inception in 1990, the TSB has completed more than 2000 investigations, made more than 630 recommendations, and issued hundreds of safety communications. Over the years, more than 84% of the responses to the Board’s recommendations have been assessed as Fully Satisfactory, demonstrating the TSB’s concrete impact on the improvement of safety. Germany’s Federal Bureau for Maritime Casualty Investigation has published its BSU Annual Report for 2024, providing insights on marine casualties. The total number of notifications has dropped year-on-year: 625 in 2024 compared to 698 in 2023. This equals a reduction of about 10%. Unfortunately, this is not yet cause for celebration, as the number of marine casualties according to the IMO Code, i.e. accidents that had serious consequences, has remained stable at a high level (131 compared to 134). The International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA) has published its annual Safety Statistics Report, showing that ‘line of fire’ incidents remained the leading cause of lost time injuries (LTIs) among IMCA marine contractor Members in 2024, accounting for more than half (52%) of such injuries. The research, which IMCA has published each year since 1996, found that the total lost-time injury rate (LTIR) across its contributing Members’ onshore and offshore operations remained unchanged at 0.3 incidents per million hours worked. The United States Coast Guard (USCG) has released the U.S. Port State Control (PSC) Annual Report for 2024. The report said in 2024, a total of 11,273 individual vessels, from 79 different flag administrations, made 84,034 port calls to the U.S. 8,710 PSC exams were conducted. These exam numbers increased over the 2023 total of 8,278. The total number of ships detained in 2024 for environmental protection, safety, and security related deficiencies decreased from 101 to 82. The Tokyo MOU has released its Annual Report 2024, which conducted 32,054 inspections, which is four times the number of inspections undertaken three decades ago.
The Tokyo MOU noted that the detention rate has decreased 0.6 percentage points in 2024, continuous attention and emphasis needs to be paid as the level of detentions is still higher than that of the pre-pandemic period and almost the same level as that of ten years before. IACS, the membership organisation for the world’s leading classification societies, has published its 2024 Annual Review, which highlights the central role played by IACS in supporting safety standards in global shipping.
