In a first of its kind, the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS) has developed a comprehensive Safety Video Series to improve safety awareness across the maritime workforce.
The DGS has observed recurring safety lapses and incidents attributable to deficiencies in safety awareness by shipping companies, seafarers and trainees as evidenced by casualty investigations conducted by the Directorate.
The video series aims to address these critical elements and standardize safety indoctrination to help prevent recurrence of similar incidents by learning from past mistakes to institutionalise a safety-culture, embedding continuous learning and vigilance into training and day-today operations.
This landmark project has been initiated by the Indian Maritime Administration with the aim of minimising accidents and incidents at sea. The safety video series will supplement the safety circulars and advisories being issued by DGS about the lessons learnt from the incidents.
The DGS urged all concerned stakeholders to ensure the Safety Videos are made available to all seafarers, trainees, and new joiners under their supervision. These videos shall be integrated into the organisation’s Learning Management System (LMS), pre-sea training, post-sea training, and safety indoctrination curriculum. The videos will also be mandatory viewing for all new joiners at induction or prior to joining a vessel. Further, Maritime Training Institutes and Recruitment and Placement Services License companies will have to incorporate the videos into mandatory training modules.
The Safety Video Series can be found on the DGS YouTube Channel (@DGShipping-India). More videos will be added to the channel at regular intervals.
