With effect from 1 January 2017, IIMS has announced that its SCWG (Small Craft Working Group) will become known as LYSCWG (Large Yacht & Small Craft Working Group).

Sunseeker International has announced its intention to use the London Boat Show in January 2017 to launch and showcase its new Manhattan 66 model.
The Manhattan 66 model has a brand new deep V hull which offers signature Sunseeker performance and seakeeping whilst its open-plan layout provides enough space on board to rival much larger yachts.

The death of IIMS member, Joop Ellenbroek, following a long illness has been announced
It is with deep sadness and regret that we announce the passing away of IIMS member and CCS founder Mr Johannes Wilhelmus ‘Joop’ Ellenbroek. Although Joop passed away on September 9 after a lengthy illness, news has only just reached the IIMS office of his death.
Joop was well known within the coatings, chemicals and superyacht industry and much respected by all he worked with. After many years of working for paint manufacturers, he began his career in the superyacht industry in 1994 when he founded CCS (Coating Consultants for Superyachts), which due to his efforts is now one of the most well-known and respected coating surveying companies in the world.
Esthec® introduces a special concept luminous decking material in what it claims is World first that will provide more safety on board and a new dimension in design.
It works like this. Solar energy that has been stored during the day is converted into light at night time. The Dutch producer of composite decking for the yacht industry has achieved a world first with this revolutionary invention, which was given the provisional name “Solar Glow”. The luminous decking ensures that gangways remain visible in the dark and thus substantially increases safety aboard boats. At the same time, the innovation is sustainable, since the luminous deck uses solar power instead of electricity from non-renewable sources. In addition to improving safety, the concept also provides designers with a new dimension in creative deck design. Esthec® expects the luminous decking material, which it developed in-house, to be used both by competitive sailors and in recreational boating. The first prototype has already been presented.
Blohm+Voss has announced that it has won the tender for the set-up of a new maintenance and refit facility for megayachts in La Ciotat, in the South of France. The company will partner with La Ciotat Shipyards (managed by SEMIDEP-Ciotat), the local company in charge of the site development which is providing a large dry-dock and neighboring workshop premises embedded within the existing shipyard. Blohm+Voss will utilize this new facility in the heart of the Mediterranean to maintain and service megayachts over 80 meters in length. Operation is planned to start in November 2016.
Blohm+Voss Chief Executive Officer, Fred van Beers commented: “Setting up a maintenance facility for megayachts in La Ciotat is an important step in our current growth strategy. With our new office in Monaco and this central location in the Mediterranean we are moving our core business closer to our customers; we are now offering more flexibility and tailored life-cycle.services. The dock in La Ciotat is 200 meters long and 60 meters wide. Our customers now have the choice of utilizing our extensive shipyard facilities in Hamburg or our new base in La Ciotat for large yacht maintenance, refits or conversions. Eight marine businesses have joined forced to form The North Dock in Palma

The name of Mitch Booth may not be instantly recogniseable to you, but he’s an Olympics winning sailor and a multihull racer. Mitch has helmed America’s Cup craft in his time and knows his stuff. Furthermore, he has overseen the build of multihulls over the past 40 years on the water. So given his vast experience, perhaps it is not surprising that he has turned superyacht builder. Booth is the founder of BlackCat Superyachts, which plans to tap into the growing awareness of the advantages of catamarans; and what a beauty he is creating.

Sunseeker announces it will use the vacuum bagging technique on its yachts
Sunseeker International is to join the other big boatbuilders and start using PRO-SET epoxy and vacuum bagging techniques on its yacht decks.
It made the decision following a new case study by West System International (WSI), which revealed that the technique would provide optimal finish across all of its yacht decks.
The luxury yacht builder will now use PRO-SET ADV-170 Adhesive and vacuum bagging as standard for pre-fabricated teak deck installation across some 200 boats a year.
The range of Migaloo submersible yachts has five concepts to choose from
Austrian based company, Migaloo Private Submersible Yachts, has created multiple five submersible yacht concepts that could change the yachting landscape all together forever.
Migaloo currently has five models available that can be customised according to the owner’s preference. The range in size from 236.3 feet to 928.4 feet LOA. The submersibles wuill be built according to class, flag and in accordance with US Navy Subsafe safety standards. All models have modern acrylic pressure hull designs to ensure optimal safety for all passengers and crew onboard.
Understanding engine crankshaft deflection measurement will aid a diagnostic engineer
At some time in his career the Diagnostic Engineer may well have to examine the running of a compression ignition engine. Many of the defects that occur on such units are down to wear in the main bearings causing the crankshaft to change its longitudinal straightness. Usually the first diagnostic test on such an engine is to take a series of measurements between the crank webs at various points round the circle of rotation called somewhat in correctly crankshaft deflections. If a driving engine is of the compression ignition type with a cylinder bore above about 250 mm (10 inches), it is also necessary to consider the alignment of its crankshaft. Below that size, the overall stiffness and small size of the unit and the fact that the crankshaft itself is an integral forging make the measurement of crankshaft deflections both extremely difficult and unnecessary.
